Do foliar Fertilisers act as Substitute to Basal Fertilizers ?
Fertilizer.
Today I want to inform us of this plant product. In the recent times it has become a very controversial topic.
Plant is living organism with a complete water and food transport system. The water system is called Xylem, and the food system is called Phloem. Don't worry about them mkulima mdogoo. Plants will need the major and minor nutrients for their growth, and this are usually found in soils. The major nutrients include Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium. That is why you find fertilizers are labelled majorly on the NPK format. Minor nutrients are majorly, Amino acids etc.
The crops or plants will require the major nutrients in different concentration at different growth. When young, they need P for root development, after germination and root setting the crops need N for vegetative growth and when flowering and fruiting, they will need K. It is important for farmers to know the right fertilizers to apply at different stages, when planting or after germination use DAP ,Yara Power or any other fertilizer with high P content. During the vegetative stage's fertilizers like CAN, NPK Even ,Microp from yara. During fruiting fertilizer's such Yara Winner, NPK high K ,Mavuno Plus and others will come in handy.
It is important to note that timely application of fertilisers is important as it will enable the plant to utilise it well. It is good to apply early because majority of this fertilisers are not absorbed in the forms they are sold in. DAP has to be broken to the various forms ,Nitrates NO3, Phosphates and ammonia. This ammonia is what causes soil. Acidification as it cannot.be absorbed by crops.
During vegetative growth the N b3comes very much needed. Nitrogen is absorbed as nitrates by the roots ,N is the basic structure and simplest molecule of life. Fertilisers such CAN are best for perennial crops. Such as maize and cereals, vegetables and leafy crops can be supplemented with Urea. You can also spray Urea in small dosages such as 5 gm to field crops such as Maize.
During flowering you need to apply a high K fertilisers. Potasium is absorbed as K+ ions from the soil and.they help in formation of flowers.
Important notes to check during fertilizer applications.
Ensure proper irrigation after fertilizer application. This will help to break down and chemical processes of converting the nutrients to usable forms.
Check soil ph,absorption of fertilizers is affected by pH ,a moderate between 5.5 to 6.5 if best for root. Zone.
Never ever put much emphasis on foliar fertilizers to substitute basal fertilizers. The root zone ,root hairs ,are the best zones through which nutrients are absorbed. Let foliar supplement the micro Nutrients as they can be easily absorbed by leaves.
Rains help fix N to the soil, that's why during rains the crops become very green and succulent.
Lastly plant a tree this rainy season.
